Waterless Cookware

Waterless cooking is increasingly becoming a popular method of cooking. It has a number of advantages over conventional cooking. Ease of cooking, reduced time of cooking, ease of cleaning, and the taste of the cooked food are some of the reasons why their popularity is on the rise.

Waterless cookware aids in easy cooking and seems to take less time than conventional cooking. Since the heat is evenly distributed, burning or sticking is avoided. This results in the cookware being easier to clean. One need not use oil to prevent sticking in waterless cookware. And finally since the food gets cooked in its natural juices, the taste is always delicious and the food is also nutritious.

Cookware Sets

Waterless cookware is made of high grade stainless steel. This prevents the taste from the metal to leach into the food. Stainless steel is also easy to clean. Another thing with high grade stainless steel is that it does not require any coating like Teflon, which can get into food sometimes.

Another aspect of waterless cookware items is that their bottoms are machined flat. This enables more surface area to be in contact with the coils of an electric stove. This results in even distribution of heat. This even distribution prevents spots that can burn the food. Foods are cooked with their own natural juices in waterless cookware. This means that the vitamins and minerals are retained. Since vegetables already contain a large quantity of water, there is no need to add water in waterless cookware. Water is released from the vegetables on cooking and is turned into steam. The steam is contained in the pot with the use of a lid. The steam actually helps in the entire process of waterless cooking.

Once the steam is sufficient, a whistle notifies the cook, during which point you can turn off the heat. This way you tend to save energy and time too. One can find a number of online resources, which can equip you with the basics of waterless cookware. You can also find more about them from your friends or family members, who can give you valuable information on waterless cooking.

Silicone Cookware

Kitchen cookware has enjoyed many transitions over the centuries thanks to new materials becoming affordable and more mainstream. Archeological discoveries suggest clay pottery was instrumental in cooking from the Stone Age onwards. By the 17th century it was common for a kitchen to contain cookware cast from iron or bronze. These materials made way for the lighter and more practical stainless steel and aluminium cookware. With the introduction of revolutionary Teflon and other non-stick coatings, we had never had it so easy in the kitchen. Now is the turn of another innovative cooking material.

Silicone cookware has had a dramatic surge in popularity in recent years and now populates many kitchens and cookware shops across the globe. Many manufacturers of bakeware or kitchen utensils now have a range of silicone based products to compliment their collections. The reason behind the rise in awareness and popularity of Silicone Kitchenware lies in its long list of advantages and minimal drawbacks which we will look at in a moment. However with so many manufacturers producing silicone cooking instruments to keep up with demand, it is important to wean out the quality from those who cut corners.

Cookware Sets

Silicone cookware draws on one of its advantages (and coincidentally one of its disadvantages) - its flexibility - for its success. You can also use this feature to determine whether the item is 100% silicone or if it contains "filler" as do many low quality silicone products. By twisting the silicone check the ridges for signs of white stretching which indicates that filling materials have been used. If the colour remains constant, you have in your hands some high quality silicone! This initial check is important for several reasons besides checking you are getting what you pay for:

• Although 100% silicone is non-stick, these filling materials may not be. All the time and effort you put into baking the perfect cakes (and indeed the reason you selected silicone in the first place) may be in vein if the baked goods stick to the pan due to these fillers.

• 100% silicone is heat resistant to over 300 degrees centigrade (well above normal cooking temperatures). It will not give off odours, discolour or compromise its integrity. However the same cannot be said for the filling material.

• Silicone, in its limited research, is not dangerous to the use or the environment in any way but who knows what other materials have gone into non 100% silicone produtcs? Particularly if subjected to heat, cooking ingredients, food acids etc...

Be under no illusion that quality silicone will cost more than wooden or metal utensils but should be considered an investment that will stand the test of time whether only occasionally used in a domestic kitchen or extensively in professional kitchens.

Did you know?

Silicone is a very common element found in rocks and sand and makes up approximately 28% of the Earth's crust.

Advantages of Silicone Cookware

• Silicone is a non-stick material. The bane of all chefs' lives is the clean-up stage, scrubbing pots and pans, disposing of waste and sanitising work surfaces. Thankfully the cleanup-friendly properties of silicone ease this task. Perhaps the most obvious is the fact that silicone is non-stick. This means food will not get left baked on and crumbs easily brush off. Secondly, thanks to the flexible construction, any food caught in crevices can be removed by inverting the silicone. For those of us lucky (or lazy) enough to own dishwashers, silicone is perfectly safe and as an additional benefit, will not damage other cookware by clattering around thanks to its soft texture.

• Silicone can withstand varying temperatures. Perfect for storing food in the freezer and equally perfect for cooking in the oven, Silicone outshines other materials by absorbing the shock of varying temperatures without any physical damage. Where other materials may warp or deform when subjected to excessive temperature change, silicone does not. As the non-stick element is not simply a coating, it is impossible to flake of as with some cheaper metal cookware and bakeware items. This negates the need for using multiple products to prepare, store and cook - saving you money, cleanup time and storage space.

• Silicone cookware conducts heat very slowly meaning kitchen tops and surfaces are safe from burn marks...as is the user! Silicone is perfect for manufacturing oven gloves and grips for this reason. Utensils will always be cool to the touch no matter how long they have been sitting in that saucepan!

• Silicone does not degrade over time. It is impervious to rusting or staining from food colourants unlike wood making it perfect for cooking utensils. It shares the same sanitary benefits as stainless steel but with reduced heat conduction.

• Easy Storage - Thanks to its flexibility it can be folded or squeezed into tight or restricted spaces, it will scratch or damage other products within the same storage space due to its soft surfaces. Perhaps most importantly to the consumer is the versatility of these products, as highlighted in this section, mean that fewer products are needed in the first place cluttering up your kitchen whilst you are keeping your hands out of your pockets.

• Silicone utensils are perfect for use on non-stick surfaces as their soft features will not scratch and remove the coated surfaces that lead to the demise of the pan.

• Silicone kitchenware is now used in professional and home kitchens the world over. Their ever-increasing popularity influences manufacturers in the kitchen industry to develop more and more silicone based kitchenware with clever designs in a broad spectrum of colours. This means finding the right colour scheme or adding to your existing collection couldn't be easier.

• Other advantages include long life, lightweight and even recyclable! Yup, food grade silicone is recyclable at many outlets across the UK and indeed the world.

Disadvantages of Silicone Cookware

• Along with all the advantages listed above there is the inevitable increase in price. For example a basic wooden cooking spoon may set you back 1-2 whereas a silicone cooking spoon of the same dimensions, you could look to spend between 5-8. This inflated cost must be factored in when you are kitting out the kitchen but so does the longevity of the product. Buying silicone kitchenware is an investment

• Silicone ovenware may become more flexible when heated. As any poly-based materials heat up, much of the initial sturdiness is lost. You can combat this by sitting the silicone on a baking tray but this takes away many of the great plus-points about silicone cookware.

• Knives and sharp utensils can cut and pierce the rubbery silicone. Great care must be taken when using sharp instruments around silicone.

• As touched on above, some manufacturers get away with supplying poor quality silicone products containing other materials. Great care must be taken when shopping for silicone.

• Silicone is non-biodegradable which could cause problems in the environment later on if not properly disposed of. Silicone recycling centers operate around the globe to help reduce harmful waste.

To sum up, despite some of its disadvantages, silicone cookware is becoming more widely available in specialist cookware shops and on the internet and thanks to brightly coloured, intuitive and imaginative designs, more and more modern kitchens around the world are embracing the colour revolution.

Silicone Cookware

CKS Zeal Silicone is a fine example of UK based company leading the charge for silicone cookware. With over 200 Silicone and Melamine based products, all are available in a wide array of bright and two-tone colours. (And just to reassure you, I have conducted the "bendy-check" to make sure they are quality 100% silicone!)

Buying Weight Sets?

With the rise of obesity in America, more Americans are increasingly seeking health and fitness solutions to manage weight and to get into shape. A weight set is an essential tool in any gym, thus having one is great for any home or family. What is important in purchasing these sets is to first determine what kind you would like. With many brands, sizes, and types knowing what you want is key.

For instance, you should first determine how long you want your set to last and how durable it is. There are cast iron sets and plastic weight sets. The cast iron sets though more expensive will be durable and long lasting. The plastic sets are cheaper but over time will wear and undoubtedly have to be replaced.

Cookware Sets

Size is another factor that must be taken into consideration. If you're a beginner it is not necessary for you to go out and buy the largest dumbbell set on the market. You should take into consideration your fitness needs and what you aim to accomplish. If you are an experienced user then a smart choice would be to upgrade a level above your previous weight set. It is important to remember most weight bars that can be purchased are universal thus they allow you to buy extra weights instead of investing in a whole new system.

Price by far is the most important factor in choosing exercise equipment. Some bench sets can range from 0 to prices up in the thousands, while barbell sets can range from to 0, and dumbbell sets range from to .

Buying Weight Sets?

It is important not to rush into any purchases until you know exactly what you will need and use. When you purchase a starting dumbbell set chances are you won't be purchasing another one for awhile, so make sure you're certain of what type of weights suits your home and family needs.

Get the Most Out of Your Cast Iron Cookware With the Proper Seasoning Techniques

Cast iron cookware is an old fashioned form of cookware that still has a place in today's world of modern cooking. You will find all types of cast iron pots, pans, skillets, tea kettles, and even large dutch ovens. Those who routinely use cast iron swear by it's versatility and durability. I personally think that a good set of cast iron cookware is hard to beat.

There are a few conditions that you do have to meet when using cast iron. One of these is seasoning the new cast iron items that you buy or maintaining the seasoning of the ones you already own. Seasoning of cast iron is required to promote a non-stick surface on the cookware and make it easier to clean. Another consideration when dealing with cast iron cookware is maintaining the items in an environment where they will not begin to rust. Rust is one of the true enemies of the otherwise durable product. If these two conditions are met, then the cast iron cookware that you buy today, could still be in everyday service a hundred years from now.

Cookware Sets

The first aspect of seasoning cast iron is to start with a clean pan. Take the newly purchased item and remove any adhesive from stickers, and any other foreign material that does not belong. Washing the pan with warm soapy water and then drying it completely is normally sufficient. Next, pre-heat your oven to about 250 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The next step is to use lard or some other animal fat like bacon grease to start the seasoning process. Avoid vegetable oils as they tend to get very sticky and can ruin a brand new pan. Coat the inside of the pan with the lard and place it into the pre-heated oven for about 20 to 30 minutes. You will want to keep an eye on it to make sure the grease doesn't get too hot and start to smoke during this process. Once time has passed remove the pan and get rid of the excess grease inside the cast iron pan. Then, put the pan back in the oven for another 20 minutes or so to finish the seasoning process. A new cast iron pan may require several treatments like this to establish a good "layer" of seasoning. What I mean is that you may have to do this a couple of times before the pan starts to become really non-stick and easy to use for everyday cooking jobs. Afterwards, you can use the cast iron to cook and it wouldn't hurt to use it to fry bacon or something fatty every once in a while to help maintain good seasoning on the pan.

As mentioned before, rust is one of cast iron's true weak points. Rust can quickly turn a beautiful, well seasoned pan into a useless eyesore that you aren't quite sure what to do with. Preventing cast iron from rusting is simple if you remember a few guidelines. Always store your cast iron in a dry place. Do not keep it under the kitchen sink or hanging above your stove where it will be exposed to a steady supply of steam. Never put your cast iron away without thoroughly drying it. An easy way to dry cast iron is to place it in a hot oven for about five minutes or put it on a stove burner on high for a minute or so. This will burn off any excess water left over from when you washed it and will almost guarantee the avoidance of rust. If you do discover that your cast iron treasures have become rusted over time, there are steps to reclaim them. You may even come across a beautiful historic piece of cast iron at a yard sale or flea market and decide to revive it. Chinese Cooking Utensils

There are quite a few traditional utensils that have been used in cooking for thousands of years in China. Some of them are still seen in most of families, some can only be seen in rural areas, or may be disappearing in the modern world. But to cook authentic Chinese food that always tastes like grandma's, some of the utensils simply cannot be replaced by what you see in American stores.

Chinese Wok

Cookware Sets

Deep pan with round bottom used in several ways. Comes in iron, stainless and stainless with layer of copper on the bottom. Iron heats most evenly, but should be seasoned before using or food will stick.

To season: Fill pan with water. Add soap and soda and bring to boil. Pour off water, wipe dry. Place pan over strong heat. Add oil and rotate till pan is coated. Pour off excess oil. Place pan over weak fire and wipe with dry cloth.

To clean: After using pan, wash while still hot. Wipe and place over heat to dry completely.

Knife

Heavy and wide. All purpose - for paring, cutting, slicing, chopping and carving.

Iron Palette

Comes in square or round front. Rounded ones are easier to use with Chinese wok. Use for frying, sautéing and basting.

Iron Spoon

Use back side for mixing food with minimum breakage.

Steamer

Used for steaming buns, chicken, meat, fish. Place over Chinese wok filled with boiling water. Buy one size smaller than wok. There are new styles of steamers on the market made of different materials. But Chinese believe that the traditional steamer works the best.

Slotted Spoon

Used for deep frying and boiling to get rid of excess oil or water.

Wire Sieve

With handle. Used for boiling noodles, dumplings, etc.

Steamers for Pastries

Small in size - about 15cm (6") in diameter. Used in same method as large steamer. Serve hot pastries in steamers. Typical foods served are small meat buns (small steamer meat buns, or Xiao Long Bao Zi), steamed meat dumplings (Shao Mai), etc.

Moulds for cookies

Made from wood with various carved designs. No longer popular in the modern society since people tend to buy cookies off the shelf. Some may still use the moulds for major holidays, or just Chinese New Year.

Bamboo Brush

Used for washing hot wok. Guess only people in some rural areas still use this type of brush. More people use regular washing cloth found on market.

Rolling Pin

Used for preparing noodles, dumpling skins, Chinese pancakes, and more. With the busy daily life nowadays, most of time people choose to buy ready to cook fresh noodles and dumpling skins from the small vendors seen on the street to save us time. Choose ones made from sturdy wood.
