Affordable Renovation With Countertop Resurfacing

Let's face it; remodeling a kitchen can be an expensive prospect. From appliances and paint to floors and countertops, transforming a kitchen completely can require quite a bit of money and time. For most of us, tackling the entire project at once is simply cost-prohibitive. But there are ways to visually transform your kitchen space without breaking the bank. The answer lies in creative solutions to kitchen renovation; and one such idea is that of countertop resurfacing.

There should be no underestimating countertops in their ability to set the tone in a kitchen. Because they cover the space that they do - and because are often the focal point of the kitchen - they dramatically change the style of an area. Changing the countertop will allow you to carry through with the design you desire and visually impact the space with just one renovation.

But as dramatic as they are, countertops can also be expensive. And sometimes, changing them completely is not within a standard budget. Luckily there are ways to transform the countertops without having to change them completely; countertop resurfacing is an affordable and easy way to change the look of your kitchen without the mess and expense of replacing the materials completely.

Luckily, most kitchen countertops come in a standard size; this can be a major advantage when it comes to countertop resurfacing as laminate material often comes ready to buy at the standard sizes of most countertops. Today's laminates come in an extensive selection of colors, styles, and textures and because they are mass-produced, they are often extremely affordable.

Laminate material is only about one sixteenth of an inch thick and, therefore, can be handled quite easily. But before you adhere the new laminate to the existing countertop you need first to prepare the countertop itself. Begin by removing the countertop and stripping it of its laminate and glue. This can be done with chemical solutions available at home improvement stores. Once the glue and laminate is removed the exposed wood needs to be sanded smooth in order to create a pliable surface for easy adherence.

Once your surface is ready you can spread the glue for your new laminate. Again, this specific glue can be purchased at a home improvement store. The most important part of this process is to make sure that the glue is spread thinly and evenly over the entire surface. Uneven glue distribution can result in bubbling of the laminate and an uneven countertop surface.

A glue spreader can assist you in making this layer of glue as even as possible. Be sure that the glue reaches the edge of the countertop in order to achieve a proper seal of the laminate to the edges. The edges are critical to countertop resurfacing as edges that are not properly glued down can fold or come loose, exposing the laminate to moisture and subsequent damage.

A heavy roller can be used to roll over the laminate to ensure even adherence of the counter top and glue. Some glue seeping out of the edges is to be expected, and can easily be wiped off before it dries.

Affordable Halloween Recipes - Scary Food Ideas Using Tuna

Creepy food is always part of a Halloween feast and no matter how simple they come, they add color to the occasion. You may be preparing for a Halloween festivity or a simple get-together fun; a little creativity can turn even your most standard meals into creepy Halloween treats. Here are some ways to transform something ordinary to something extraordinary, using tuna.

Tuna Brain Salad

Cookware Sets

Make two cups of tuna and mayo mixture the way you usually do it, but add more mayo or cream to make it appear creamy. Set aside. Prepare a cup of "clear or colorless" gelatin according to the package instructions then stir the cooked gelatin on the tuna and mayo mixture. Pour mixture into a brain mold. You can buy one at bakery items or seasonal stores. Chill for 1 hour.

Unmold by turning the mold upside down then gently pop out the brain onto a platter with a bed of lettuce. You can use your hidden sculpting skills to make the tuna even look like a brain.

Tuna Witch Fingers

Slice tuna fillets to form finger-shaped pieces. Fry on your usual way. Paint the pointed end or "nail portion" by using some red food coloring and brush on with a small kitchen brush. If you have a red decorator gel, squeeze gel onto the tip of the tuna slices to form nails.

Halloween Tuna Eyeballs

Combine ground tuna, flour, cheese, some butter, pepper and salt. When the tuna mixture is enough to hold together, shape into eyeball-sized balls. Flatten each ball just a little and press pimiento-stuffed green olive in the center. Arrange in a way the "eye" (pimento) is facing outward. Mold tuna meat around the olive, and bake for 10 minutes.

Tuna Monstrous Sandwiches

In this recipe, use white tuna fish that is packed in water. Cut tuna into small pieces then mix with celery, mayonnaise, lemon juice and seasonings. Cut the bread slices in the shape of ghosts. Spread tuna mixture onto the bread to form sandwiches. Use raisins to make the eyes and mouth.

Celebrating Halloween doesn't really need to be expensive. Creepy, maybe, but these Halloween recipes are only designed to put smiles and fun around. I hope the Halloween tuna ideas will help to get you started in creating memorable Halloween traditions. You may find it inflexible to mingle tuna with your other usual Halloween dishes, but the whole sense of chaotic flavors running on your palate could add up to the whole "scary" scheme. After all its Halloween night.

Happy Halloween!

Induction Cookware - Affordable Options?

For those who are intrigued by the advantages of induction cooking, the thought of having to replace your existing pots and pans with new induction cookware may keep you from exploring the option further. However there are some inexpensive cookware solutions available, and further, your existing cookware may be perfectly suitable for induction cooking. Just because a cookware set is not advertised as a "induction" set, does not mean that it is not suitable; a simple check allows you quickly determine if some or all of your existing cookware is acceptable for induction cooking.

The easiest way to determine if your existing cookware is suitable is to perform the "magnet test". Find a generic magnet and see if the bottom surface of your cooking equipment is magnetic. If it is, you're good to go! If it sticks, but just barely, I would pass, as this indicates only marginal usability for induction cooking. Cast iron requires no checking, so if you own an old cast iron skillet, all you need is an inexpensive portable induction cooktop to venture into induction cooking.

Cookware Sets

Stainless steel actually may either magnetic or non-magnetic, depending on its composition. While many of the popular stainless sets will not pass the magnet test, we have two recommendations that have been confirmed to be magnetic. Just a quick note; many stainless cooking vessels will us a sandwich construction, so that the inner surface that is in contact with the food will be a different stainless steel than the bottom surface (the surface that is in contact with the burner). So it is important to check perform the magnet check on the right surface. All-Clad though not inexpensive is known to be high quality and their stainless cookware sets definitely pass the magnet test.

If you're interested in trying out cooking with induction technology before investing in an expensive induction cookware set,, there are budget options available. One option would be to purchase an inexpensive induction burner, and obtain a cast iron skillet; these can even be purchased for a few dollars at thrift stores. So for under 0 you can enjoy the benefits of induction cooking.
